Amazon Studios announced on Saturday (February 13) that Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge will create and feature in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, an upcoming Amazon Original series which is based on the 2005 New Regency film. The series is scheduled to be released in 2022.
Atlanta star Glover Donald and Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge will also be executive producers, with co-creator, show runner and executive producer Francesca Sloane, executive producers Yariv Milchan, film producer Michael Schaefer and producer Jenny Robins.
Sharing a video featuring Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Amazon Prime Video’s official Instagram account wrote, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a series from the minds of @childidhgambino and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, coming to your screens in 2022.”
Glover Donald, also known by the stage name Childish Gambino, is an American actor, comedian, singer, rapper, writer, director and producer. On the other hand, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is an English actress, television producer and writer. Both stars have won many awards for their best work in the industry.
Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, said in a statement, “Talk about the dream team! Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. It’s truly a dream for us, as it will be for our global audience, to have these two forces of nature collaborating as a powerhouse creative team.”
“Mr. and Mrs. Smith is an iconic property, and we can’t wait to see how Donald, Phoebe, and Francesca make it their own. We’re thrilled to be working with them and with such great partners at New Regency,” she added.
Featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in the lead roles, the original movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005) is about two married assassins who are ordered to kill each other. The movie earned a total of USD 487 million around the world amid its release.
When the original movie was released, it had mixed reviews. While the Washington Post called the movie “a kicky, twisted thrill ride”, San Francisco Chronicle critic Mick LaSalle called it “glossy, but awful”.
